Amazon looks to the stars for the future of its cloud service
Amazon Web Services has just announced the creation of a department dedicated to satellites and aerospace.
Amazon aims higher. Amazon Web Services, the cloud division of Jeff Bezos' company, announced Tuesday the creation of a new space department. Called Aerospace and Satellite Solutions, it will be headed by Clint Crosier, a US Air Force veteran who recently worked on the establishment of the Space Force.
A cloud for the space industry. This new department aims to increase the cloud capabilities of Amazon and provide services to space companies. The company says it wants to offer data processing in orbit and offer support for missions led by NASA in space. In 2018, Amazon had already launched a cloud service called AWS Ground Station, to allow its customers to manage a fleet of satellites and the data flow collected by them. Capella Space, a San Francisco-based satellite imagery company, is one of the clients of this service. Amazon is also undertaking to deploy a fleet of satellites to bring the internet from the stars, as part of the Kuiper project.
The cloud war. The world leader in the cloud industry, Amazon Web Services, however, is under increasing pressure from its competitors. Last year, Microsoft inflicted a snub on Jeff Bezos' company by winning the juicy JEDI contract to modernize the Pentagon's IT infrastructure. Google and Oracle are also trying to nibble on the market share of the world leader. Amazon, which anticipates an increase in the demand for cloud services in the space industry and invests heavily to prepare for it, sees this as an opportunity to outstrip its rivals.
